Friday Fantasy Vacation: King Pacific Lodge, BC

I’ve lived in the Northwest a long time now and there are still so many places I haven’t yet been. Unluckily, or maybe luckily if I ever get a month off and a wad of cash for a full-blown tour, most of them are in British Columbia. I’m sure I’ll fantasize about them all summer long but for today, I’ll stick to the King Pacific Lodge on Princess Royal Island, about 380 miles north of Vancouver and in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest.  The resort is an integral part of the stewardship of the rainforest and has won multiple awards for not only being a super luxurious wilderness lodge but for also being a great example of how to offer memorable and comfortable travel experiences without shoving a big footprint on your locale. The 17 room lodge is actually a floating lodge and works on an all-inclusive model that includes a round trip float-plane flight from Vancouver, room (obviously), all meals, guided activities and a host bar. The most important thing you need to know, is that it’s gorgeous up there and you’ll not likely ever get another opportunity to see the elusive spirit bear in your life.

And let’s not forget the wildlife:

black bear

grizzly bear

spirit bear!

Friday Fantasy Vacation: Hospes Las Casas del Rey de Baeza

In true Spanish form this Sevilliana hotel has an exceedingly long name and a simple, welcoming demeanor. Smack in the center of Seville, the hotel was once an 18th century monastery, but now houses 41 rooms all around a central courtyard. Very Spanish, very much the perfect place to stay in Seville.

Desert Getaway: Amangiri Resort

Southern Utah is a beautiful place any time of year, but Spring seems like an ideal time to visit. Not yet blisteringly hot and a chance at spying some native plants in bloom. The Amangiri Resort is a 15 minute drive from Lake Powell and offers a selection of suites all surrounding a large pool. There’s a spa, of course, and some seriously great dining. Sounds like the perfect recipe for a getaway to me.

April in Paris Hotels

There’s a reason why people write songs about Paris in the spring. I won’t be going this year until Summer, but if I were able to now these hotels would be at the top of my wish list.

Friday Fantasy Vacation: Capella Lodge, Lord Howe Island

Only a two hour flight from Sydney, this World Heritage listed island is exactly the kind of place to go when wanting to escape the world. Yes, there’s a spa, hiking trails and snorkeling, golf, surfing, and fishing but with views like this I’d just find a comfortable chair and look around for awhile.

The American Colony Hotel, Jerusalem

While Jerusalem may not be the first thought in your head when planning a vacation, it remains a lure for millions around the world of varying faiths. It seems a fitting place to ponder as Passover and Easter approach this year. And if you are going to go to Jerusalem, for Passover or any other time, and feel flush enough to shell out for some luxurious lodgings, then this hotel should be at the top of your list. Originally built as a palace for a pasha and his wives in the mid 19th century, it was transformed into a hotel for European and American travelers in 1902. It is in East Jerusalem and close to the walls of the old city. There is an outdoor pool, multiple restaurants, large interior courtyard and even shops. It seems colony may have been the perfect name after all.

Friday Fantasy Vacation: Six Senses Nihn Van Bay

As an American born in the 70’s I grew up in the shadow of, unfortunately, more than a couple of international wars/skirmishes/incidents/what-have-you and for most of my life it had never occurred to me to take a luxury vacation to Vietnam. Whether right or wrong, I can’t say that that was a place that was ever etched into my psyche as a luxury vacation spot. Not in the way that places like Cabo San Lucas, Martinique, Ibiza, or pretty much all of Costa Rica has. Myopic or no, I had obviously not been exposed to this resort on the eastern coast of Vietnam or I would have been thinking of vacationing here much sooner. This place is amazing. There’s the usual myriad of water sports and activities, there’s a spa, there’s badminton for crying out loud! Although, do you see that couple below looking happy and romantic next to that big rock formation, of which the area is famous? I can whole-heartedly assure you that on my vacation here, you’ll see my husband climbing those rocks instead of snuggling in the window seat. That couple purchased the “romance package” and we usually buy into the “indulgence package” which means that he’s on a rock and I’m in the window seat lounge with a martini. The beautiful thing about a place like this is that whatever you want your fantasy vacation to be, it can be.

Friday Fantasy Vacation: Rockhouse Hotel, Jamaica

The Rockhouse is a boutique hotel perched atop the cliffs of Pristine Cove just outside Negril, Jamaica. It is consistently rated one of the best hotels with one of the best restaurants in Caribbean. It’s also home to its own Rockhouse Foundation which has been able to give back a million dollars to the local schools and library of Negril. So I don’t know what could make for a better fantasy vacation today besides a beautiful hotel with stellar food, to-die-for views and the knowledge that a portion of your well spent money will go to support the local kids.

Friday Fantasy Vacation: Koh Lanta, Thailand

When a friend told me that she’s heading to Thailand for a last minute business related trip to Bangkok I knew where I was headed for this Friday’s fantasy vacation. I’ve yet to go to Thailand, but if I do I want to stay here. This resort is set on 100 acres on the southern tip of this island in the southwestern province of  Krabi. The resort itself is in a protected woodland area hidden away by cashew trees. Yes, I did say cashew trees. Besides laying around the beach, swimming and getting massages, there’s great hiking and diving and even elephants to ride. Get ready for fantasy time.

Palacio Belmonte, Lisbon

Few things make me yearn for a sunny city day like watching a “wintry mix” of rain, snow, sleet, and sideways wind pelt the windows of my house. Instead of staring at that, I’m going to pretend I’m in the ancient city of Lisbon and staying here, at the oldest palace in that old city. Built in the 15th century into Roman and Moorish walls and right next to St. George’s Castle, this is the perfect place to soak up the history of the Portuguese capital. There are not televisions but there is a large library and a cafe. But really, I’d reserve one of the suites (10 in all) that comes with a private terrace and just sit in the sun.
